Holiday Potluck

  • December 12, 2011 · 6:00 PM
  • Watauga Public Library

Join us for this event, the second of two holiday-themed potlucks co-sponsored by VegBoone and Boone Raw Food Community. It will be held on Monday, December 12th at the Watauga Public Library, 140 Queen Street in Boone. Arrive between 6:00 and 6:30. Please bring a cooked vegan or raw vegan dish (no meat, fish, eggs, dairy, or honey) that would serve 6-8, your own place setting, and a copy of your recipe. Multiple copies to share with others would most certainly be appreciated by participants.  Come celebrate a compassionate holiday dinner with others who eat consciously.

For those who would like to participate there will be a White Elephant gift exchange. Do you have something “odd” that you would like to re-give to someone else? This is just for fun, so wrap up something you don’t want and get something else you probably won’t want in exchange!!

Potluck followed by a poetry reading

  • November 1, 2011 · 6:30 PM
  • Watauga Public Library

Join us on Tuesday, November 1st at 6:30 to share a dish and meet others in the area interested in the benefits of a plant-based diet.  Please bring enough for six servings.  The dish should be vegan (no meat, fish, eggs, dairy, honey) so that all who attend can sample your creation.  Please bring either the recipe or a list of ingredients.  This location has a kitchen, so you may refrigerate or heat your food if needed.  We request that you bring your own eating utensils, plates and cup.

Following the potluck, Kathryn Kirkpatrick, VegBoone member and author of the recently published book of poems “Unaccountable Weather,” will present a poetry reading.

Kirkpatrick is a professor of English and sustainable development at Appalachian State University. Her recent poetry collection, published by Press 53 in September, details the agonizing struggle against cancer while reaffirming life.

Critics describe the award-winning poet’s latest work as “astonishing, unforgettable” and “moving studies in empathy.” Former North Carolina Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer says, “Kathryn Kirkpatrick is a poet of such thoroughgoing honesty that reading some of these poems feels like eavesdropping… Kirkpatrick does not prettify the moment. Nor does she diminish it.”

If you would like to purchase a copy of “Unaccountable Weather”, and bring it for Kathryn to sign, it is available at the ASU Bookstore (the library does not permit book sales on the premises).

The film features leading experts on health and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that will have people talking for years.  Join the conversation that’s changing the way America eats.  To make the event even more informative, Dr. Matt Brown, of High Country Proactive Health, has graciously consented to answer your questions after the screening.

This film will be shown at 7.  It will be proceeded by a potluck dinner at 6 for those who would like to participate.  Please bring a dish that will serve at least 6 and is plant based; so that all can taste your creation.  (No meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey.)   Please bring a list of ingredients or the recipe.
