Peace on Earth December Potluck

peace

For the animals.  For the planet.  For the people.

  • Monday, December 15 · 6:00 PM
  • Watauga Public Library

Greetings!  Two weeks from now we hope you will join us for the “Peace on Earth” December potluck. Arrive between 6 and 6:30pm at the Watauga Public Library on Monday, December 15th.  Please bring a vegan dish (no meat, fish, egg, dairy, or honey) that serves at least 8 people as well as your own place setting.  Copies of your recipe to share with others are also greatly appreciated.  In choosing to live as vegans we are dedicated to nonviolence and to contributing as little as possible to the suffering of others.  This month let us recognize that by extending our compassion to all sentient beings we not only allow others freedom from harm but find greater peace within ourselves as well.

As long as people will shed the blood of innocent creatures there can be no peace, no liberty, no harmony between people. Slaughter and justice cannot dwell together.
—Isaac Bashevis Singer, writer and Nobel laureate (1902–1991)

Come celebrate a Very Vegan Thanks-Living with us at this month’s November potluck.   Bring a vegan dish that’s rich and hearty or a favorite veganized Thanksgiving dish that you’d like to share as well as a copy of the recipe (multiple copies to share would be appreciated).  It shouldbe large enough to feed at least 8 people and contain no meat, fish, dairy, eggs or honey.  You’ll also need to bring your own place setting.  Together let us give thanks for all the wonderful diverse life on earth with an extra special appreciation for turkeys.  There is much we can learn from these incredible birds.  Let’s make like lively, curious turkeys and come together to play and form stronger social bonds!

It will be held on Tuesday, November 25th at the Watauga County Public Library, 140 Queen Street in Boone. Arrive between 6:00 and 6:30.

BLACKFISH: Free Showing

Sunday, April 6, 2014   4:00 pm
Boone Healing Arts Center, 838 State Farm Road in Boone

From the film makers:

Killer whales are beloved majestic, friendly giants yet infamous for their capacity to kill viciously. BLACKFISH unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of the notorious performing whale Tilikum, who – unlike any orca in the wild – has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. BLACKFISH expands on the discussion of keeping such intelligent creatures in captivity.

Hope you will join us for this important film!   Many thanks to the Boone Healing Arts Center for inviting us to show this film  at their beautiful facility.

Cha Da Thai

Sunday Lunch at Cha Da Thai

Sunday, March 23, 2014   1:00 pm
Cha Da Thai Restaurant, 173 Howard Street in Boone

Our next event will be lunch at Cha Da Thai, Boone’s authentic Thai restaurant, that offers many plant-based dishes. From choices like Pad Thai (no egg), Sesame Tofu and Tom Yum Soup to Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango for dessert, you will easily find a variety of dishes that suit your taste. The tofu in dishes can be ordered steamed or stir-fried and brown rice is now available as well as white rice. This restaurant has been a favorite of local vegans for years.

Lunch specials are $5.99, but there will be lots of other choices, priced higher, as well. We met with a staff member and reviewed the entire menu to determine which dishes are vegan or could be made vegan. We will have a special menu to order from. Separate checks for each individual or family. Please order only from the vegan menu.

Join us to enjoy a delicious lunch and to support this local restaurant.

Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home — Free Film Screening

Thursday, January 23, 2014, 7 pm, Watauga Public Library

peaceable

Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home is a riveting story of transformation and healing. This award-winning film explores the awakening conscience of several people who grew up in traditional farming culture and who have now come to question the basic assumptions of their way of life. Presented through a woven tapestry of memories, music, and breathtaking accounts of life-altering moments, the film provides insight into the farmers’ sometimes amazing connections with the animals under their care, while also making clear the complex web of social, psychological and economic forces that have led them to their present dilemma.

We loved this film and can’t wait to share it with VegBoone members and the larger community as well.  If you are able, please bring a vegan dessert to share with filmgoers after the showing.  If not, please come anyway, we’d love to have you!
